Acupuncture
Acupuncture, also known as Meridian Therapy, is a healing art that has been around for centuries. The ancient Chinese discovered energy pathways in the body called meridians. If there is a disruption or imbalance of the energy flow in these meridians, symptoms and disease occur. The goal of acupuncture is to restore normal energy flow by stimulation of acupuncture points along the affected meridian(s) allowing the body to heal.
The stimulation is typically done by the insertion of small, thin needles into the skin at these points (acupuncture), but can sometimes be stimulated by pressure over the point without the insertion of a needle (acupressure). For each insertion we use a sterile, individually packaged, disposable needle. Acupuncture needles tend to be quite painless. If there is any discomfort, it is sometimes described as feeling similar to a mosquito bite.
We commonly treat musculoskeletetal disorders such as: migraine and tension headaches, neck and back pain, tennis elbow, sciatica, joint pain, and osteoarthritis, just to name a few. We have also treated patients for trigeminal neuralgia, sinusitis and smoking cessation, and weight loss. Treatment times vary on a case by case basis so a consultation and examination by one of our doctors is needed to assess your condition and develop a treatment plan specific to your individual needs. Although acupuncture has become increasingly utilized, it is not typically covered by insurance.
Acupuncture and chiropractic care can be natural partners in health care. Both are natural and noninvasive, and the majority of our patients do both treatments in conjunction with one another. While acupuncture helps to restore proper energy flow in the meridians, chiropractic manipulation addresses the structure and function of the spinal column. This in turn affects the transmission and expression of the nerve energy to and from the rest of the body. Correction of both often allows for the best and quickest restoration and maintenance of health.
